Preface

The catastrophic events following September 11, 2001 have vividly revealed to all of us the vast inadequacy of conventional medicine (the medical system that has monopolized our health care) to handle the broad range of medical consequences in the event of terrorist attacks.

Millions of New York City residents, including thousands of the heroic workers at "Ground Zero", were exposed to a vast array of toxic pollutants as a result of the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers. These pollutants included asbestos, mercury, burnt plastics, fiberglass and other carcinogenic substances.

Many Ground Zero workers, including firemen and police officers, developed serious respiratory ailments and now face various degrees of permanent disability. The long-term health implications of exposure to these noxious pollutants are impossible to predict because of the severe limitations of conventional diagnostic methods; yet they are expected to be very significant and to include increased cancer rates.

ANTHRAX - and the failure of Cipro

In addition to terrorist-induced exposure to pollutants, respiratory anthrax spread through the postal system killed as many as 50% of those who were infected. This high percentage of deaths occurred despite the fact that all of the infected patients were treated with the super powerful and costly antibiotic, Cipro, reputed to be the best therapy conventional medicine has to offer against this fatal disease.

Given these results, it is clear that the tolls of biological, toxicological or nuclear terrorism will be astronomical should future attacks occur.

U.S. government officials have openly admitted the inevitability of even worse terrorist attacks against the general civilian population as the war against Iraq proceeds. One needs only to ask: "What would I do - what could I do, in the face of a terrorist attack that employs methods of mass destruction? What would I do to protect my children, my spouse, myself? " to realize that as a nation, we are frighteningly underequipped for the actuality of such an event.

The emotional terror in the aftermath of the tragedy of September 11, as well as the chain of threats that forecast additional terrorist attacks, sent millions of frightened individuals across the nation into a state of frenzy. The demand for anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping pills and coping medications skyrocketed, notwithstanding their cost, multiple side effects, and consequent chemical dependency.

Most importantly, these psychotropic interventions fail to offer true healing to the afflicted.

Progressive Deterioration of Health

The environmental hazards at Ground Zero were more clearly revealed on December 11, 2001, when the Fox Channel's The O'Reilly Factor examined the progressive health deterioration of the rescue workers there. One fireman on the program voiced his feelings of hopelessness and despair at becoming a chronic invalid with a diminished lifespan.

Similarities with the workers' plight and with that of our veterans afflicted with the mysterious Gulf War Syndrome, seemed sadly appropriate.

Another guest on the program, a conventional medical doctor from a prestigious university hospital in New York City, was unable to offer much hope and only promised to "watch" the workers. Because conventional medicine is neither capable of effectively identifying the toxic substances that have invaded the internal organs nor of removing them, the promise to "watch" has only one practical meaning: to passively observe each person's physical destruction while busily performing the myriads of tests which document the downhill course.

There ARE Other Medical Options

Despite the obvious and severe limitations in the ability of conventional medicine to handle these crises, no serious attempts have been made to incorporate other medical options. Alternative and integrative forms of medicine have been grossly underutilized, despite their potential to provide better, safer, and more economical options.

Much of this is due to a generally accepted presumption that alternative medicine represents inferior science. This blanket dismissal of integrative and alternative medicine has reduced them to the status of medical orphans.

Yet, as this book will demonstrate, the presumption of inferior science does not withstand rigorous impartial scientific scrutiny. Rather, it is based upon cultural myth. The myth of the inferiority of alternative medicine is an unavoidable psychological by-product in a society preoccupied with body chemistry-based approaches.
